Recent survey trends have just been released which make interesting reading for organisations offering products and services to HR professionals. Survey data was collected in August 2008 and is based on responses from HR related professionals.
Key trends highlighted include the following
64% of HR buyers use the Internet as their first stop when searching for HR related services or products that they are interested acquiring. Interesting they go online even before getting a recommendation from a peer.
In excess of 50% of HR buyers that were surveyed indicated that they use an Internet search engines at least once a week to search for human resources related information. Not surprisingly Google was the most popular search engine.
Research found that the most popular “business” social networking service for HR buyers was LinkedIn.
To me there are no surprises with this research. The internet is now the key marketing medium to target potential customers and Google of the search engine of choice. What is of surprise though is the lack of uptake by product and service providers. Many are making half hearted attempts to embrace online marketing.
For example we gave an opportunity a few weeks back for free advertising on this site in the form of a free post. Did anyone take it up? NO!! Why because they would have to write a short post themselves with fresh content.
You see this site has about 300 visitors a day and you can see from the URL that it has 2 very relevant words “HR” and “RECRUITMENT” so you can bet the traffic includes HR Professionals. The site ranks well for many important key word searches. It’s not rocket science really ……..
Anyway anyone still interested in free advertising and PR I will ask you to visit HR & Recruitment Services

Below are some interesting HR & Recruitment related facts about Ireland – Ageism, Immigration, Emigration and Skills shortages in Technology.
Ageism in Ireland
Not only is the government targeting the elderly by trying to wipe out medical cards but it also looks like employers are not treating older workers too well either. The equality authority revealed that their most common complaint in 2007 was age discrimination.
Emigration & Immigration– Ireland 2008
Recent Emigration and Immigration figures should not be a surprise to anyone. Below is an outline of what you should already know. Noone is moving to Ireland, everyone is moving to Australia and those left in Ireland are breeding like rabbits to make up for the reduction in immigrants and increase in emigrants. Certainly on days like this Oz seems a great place to be.
26,000 less immigrants came to Ireland in last 12 months to April 2008 according to CSO
83,800 moved to Ireland down from 109,500
45,000 moved abroad with OZ the most popular destination 11,300 to OZ
Population increased – highest births since 1980 – 72,300
Tech Sector Jobs
The skills gap for the Tech sector has been estimated at 7,000 forcing organisations to look abroad to find new staff. I find this very surprising and would ask – why is facebook moving to Ireland? This gap will get worse as there are fewer grads taking up computer, engineering or technical courses. Probably because they have decided to go to Oz like everyone else.

More data released indicates that a recession is still on the horizon in Ireland. Retail sales figures for 2008 to date are very disappointing, car sales down 50% in May from 2007 and generally we are keeping what little money we have in our pockets. Add into the pot that there are now 207,300 signing on the live register which is the highest figure since the middle of 1999. Construction sector is doomed, manufacturing has all but left our shores and many other sectors are looking shaky. Did I mention the property crash and negative equity?
But aside from all this – wasn’t it a great day today!! I just came back from a walk on the beach with my baby daughter – very pleasant evening. Her only worries seem to be the two teeth trying to escape from her gums but aside from that she is in good form. She has decided not to take part in the recession!! In fact she doesn’t seem to understand it much or want to. She seems to be more interested in the dogs being walked on the beach and birds flying overhead.
I read an article some time back and it instructed readers not to listen to the news or read the papers as we are being drip fed a constant stream of negativity. You have to think though that this makes sense. If we hear it enough we will believe it. This will in turn impact our behaviour and it will inevitably produce the reality we feared. Hey I am even guilty of writing negative stories on this blog – but you know what I genuinely think that people love to read this – especially in Ireland.
I will leave you with some positive news and unfortunately it is not HR and RECRUITMENT related – THE LOTTO IS SET TO REACH 14M THIS WEDNESDAY.

Latest figures indicate that Polish workers are returning home in their droves. The number of PPS numbers issued to Polish in the 1st quarter of 2008 has dropped significantly from 2007.
There are a number of reasons for these developments. The obvious slowdown in the Irish economy is a significant factor BUT the improving economic conditions in Poland are affecting the movement. The polish economy has been increasing at a rate of 5% and it is expected at 5.5% in 2008 compared to 1.9% in Ireland.
The flow of Polish out of Ireland could increase as a number of schemes have been set up to attract workers back home to support the growing economy. It is likely that workers in decreasing sectors like construction will jump at the chance to move back home. Perhaps this may also be a passport for some Irish construction workers to live and work in a new country BUT more importantly help balance the supply and demand for staff issues.
PPS numbers issued to Polish workers
1st quarter 2008 – 11,616
1st quarter 2007 – 18,729
1st quarter 2006 – 20,341
1st quarter 2005 – 10,402
