Microprint to close with a loss of 130 jobs in Tallaght

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Microprint has announced that it will close its Tallaght plant in April with the loss of 130 jobs. This is tough news for the region as there were 230 jobs lost in February with the announcement from Jacobs.

It was stated that increased competition and doubts over key contracts were the reasons for the decision. But could it be that we are not buying enough RTE Guides as this is one of a number of publications that the company prints.

I guess that a high cost base played a major factor in this decision as it would have had an impact on the competitiveness of the company. Anyway the 130 staff are probably not worried why and are more concerned about transition into new employment as soon as possible.

Job loss at Glaxo and possibly SR Technics

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

GlaxoSmithKline announced 100 redundancies in Cork today. This is a blow for the Pharmaceutical sector as they are good employers in the region – 1600 staff. Poor sales were put forward as the reason for Job Loss.

A redundancy cloud hangs over SR Technics with suggestions that 200 jobs could go as a result of lost contract. SR Technics lost 3 of the 4 contracts they had with Aer Lingus. Fortunately they held on the Line maintenance contract which if lost could have threatened the bulk of the 1500 staff currently employed.

The above news was in contrast with new job announcements in Dublin and Belfast. ServiceSource is to create 100 jobs in Dublin and Fidessa 26 jobs in Belfast.

Redundancies – Sercom Solutions & American Power Conversion.

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

More job loss this week included 120 in Limerick and 35 in Mayo.

SerCom Solutions is set to make 120 staff redundant. Sercom is a global supply chain specialist based in Limerick. The news follows the loss of 220 staff in Dublin. Interestingly Sercom Solutions set up operations in China in 2005. Changing customer demands was cited as the reason for the closure.

This news was part of an eventful week in the jobs market. Expected jobs loss at ICT Europe did not happen although a reduced working week was introduced for some staff. County Mayo was hit with 35 jobs lost at American Power Conversion (APC)

Positive jobs news this week included the creation jobs at Channel Adviser, Vistakon and Umun.

Arnotts & Boyers – 600 retail workers face redundancy

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Arnotts has announced that it is making 600 retail staff redundant in Dublin. This eqates to two thirds of its existing workforce and bigger number than the expected 400. Although Arnotts will employ approx 1200 staff when it has revamped its premises in 3 years time BUT this is a huge blow for the staff and the retail sector. The redundancy and the package are currently being ironed out.

It will be interesting if Arnotts will provide outplacement redundancy support to the staff as they will be entering a tough employment market. I noted in the reports that quite a few of the employees affected have been employer with Arnotts for quite some time so these supports would be very beneficial.
