It finally seem like Irish firms are becoming a bit more creative in the war on talent. In a bid to attract new staff and retain existing staff Irish firms are offering new benefits such as free laundry service to cleaning homes. If this was offered to me I would smell a rat – obviously they will be working you that hard you won’t have time to do it yourself.
On a serious note salaries remain high on the agenda when employee enter the job market but there is increasing evidence that lifestyle perks are increasing in popularity with job-hunters. The whole work life balance issue is a popular topic particularly in Ireland with the ever increasing demands on workers.
So how can employers differentiate themselves outside of salary?
Pensions
Further Education
Health Cover
Flexi-time
Holidays
Gym membership
Onsite creches
Free bicycles to travel to work (I wouldn’t risk it)
Free housekeeping
Free dry cleaning service
So what next on the perks front? If you have an additional perk that you would like to share with us just post it below.

Latest figures indicate that Polish workers are returning home in their droves. The number of PPS numbers issued to Polish in the 1st quarter of 2008 has dropped significantly from 2007.
There are a number of reasons for these developments. The obvious slowdown in the Irish economy is a significant factor BUT the improving economic conditions in Poland are affecting the movement. The polish economy has been increasing at a rate of 5% and it is expected at 5.5% in 2008 compared to 1.9% in Ireland.
The flow of Polish out of Ireland could increase as a number of schemes have been set up to attract workers back home to support the growing economy. It is likely that workers in decreasing sectors like construction will jump at the chance to move back home. Perhaps this may also be a passport for some Irish construction workers to live and work in a new country BUT more importantly help balance the supply and demand for staff issues.
PPS numbers issued to Polish workers
1st quarter 2008 – 11,616
1st quarter 2007 – 18,729
1st quarter 2006 – 20,341
1st quarter 2005 – 10,402

Recent reports have indicated that Dublin commuter towns have been hardest hit by unemployment. There have been calls for the government to channel more energy in attracting employers to set up in these regions. Some of the findings are below.
Newbridge – 21.5% of the population on the live register.
Navan – 9.61% of the population on the live register.
Edenderry – 16.5% of the population on the live register.
Maynooth – 19.76% of the population on the live register.
Athy – 14.88% of the population on the live register.
Bray – 6.36% of the population on the live register.
Ardee – 21.03% of the population on the live register.
According the CSO unemployment rose 6.4% last month to its highest level since July 1999. There are now just under 200,000 people signing on in Ireland.
There have been calls from the government to step up its school building programme to help combat the slump in the construction sector.

Struggling to find job applicants and don’t know what to do then get creative. There are the traditional routes to source staff including paper advertisements, recruitment agencies and online job boards. These cost money and sometimes do not provide the results that you want. You have two options keep doing what you are doing or try something more creative. Other organisations are utilizing different strategies to source staff including;
Staff referrals – Many organisations tap into their existing staff resource and some of the larger organisations offer staff incentives to refer a friend. This is huge in the US but for some reason Irish workers are reluctant to refer friends. This is still worth a try.
PR & Marketing – You can get your name out there. Most SME’s never attract speculative applications because nobody has heard of them. Initiatives like a BLOG would increase your online presence. Any you know what it does not have to cost a lot. If you need information about increasing your online marketing.
Networking – You have tried your existing staff. So try staff that have left in the last number of years. They may come back or the may know someone. You can also try you customers and employers to see if they have any referrals.
Analyse youself – Take a look at your recruitment process, company image and even the benefits and packages you have to offer – introduce a bit of creativity here. Look at what you competitors are doing and try to keep one step ahead.

Employers and employees terminate employment for a variety of reasons. Nowadays managing this process and documenting this process is a delicate operation as it can be a legal minefield. There is a lot of support available for employers. This post will help you document the termination and more specifically the reason for employment termination. There are 7 key categories that employment can fall into when documenting the event.
1. Happy – Had trouble putting nose to the grindstone. Too much time spent telling jokes at the water cooler.
2. Doc – Left to pursue further education.
3. Sleepy – Chronically late for work. Caused many delays.
4. Grumpy – Poor attitude towards work. Not a team player. Trouble with mornings.
5. Dopey – Made several critical errors at work costing the company money.
6. Sneezy – Too many sick notes.
7. Bashful – Lack of initiative. Not willing to make cold calls. Too often let workplace disagreements simmer.

Interview Preparation – An employers guide
If you are a jobseeker and want information on interview preparation visit this post BUT if you are an employer read this article.
Interview preparation is essential for interviewee but equally for the interviewer. I find that many interviewees cut corners in their interview preparation – the result is that it costs them the job. But I also come across many employers who cut corners with their interview preparation and this has huge costs both in time and financially. There are a number of key points to consider.
Interview Preparation – Identify what you want
This is the foundations of any good interview process. Employers need to sit down and identify exactly what it is they are looking for in the new hire. Ideally you will being doing a competency based interview so this will involve selection of key behaviours and competencies. Typically around six competencies are found to be essential for a given job.
Interview Preparation – Identify and select interview questions
It is important to plan your interview and the questions to gain the information you need. Too many employers “go with the flow”. This results in lack of focus. But more importantly – how can you compare applicants for decision-making. If you are doing a competency interview then choose appropriate questions focused on the key competencies you selected.
Interview Preparation – Logistics & organisation
Ensure you have all necessary documentation in advance. This includes a copy of the job spec and information about the candidate including – CV, application form and personality reports if completed. You will also need general information on the recruitment process such as the next step after interview. Other considerations include logistics on the day. Has an interview room been booked, who will meet the applicants and who will be doing the interviews.
Interview Preparation – Review applicant information beforehand
It is essential to review all documentation including CV, application form and any psychometric testing results. Sounds obvious advice but believe me I have seen it all from both sides of the interview table.
Research has indicated that the best form of selection is a combination of competency based interview and objective assessment (psychometric testing). If you need help assessing and selecting candidates visit www.measurability.ie or read this post.

This article is for the poor unfortunates who drive to town and don’t get free parking. It is also for those of you with business meetings in town and regularly use street parking. If you cut corners and don’t pay your parking it could cost you 80 euro a pop. Below are the latest figures with the clamping hotspots and the number of people caught. I don’t know if these are 2007 figure or 2008 to date. Lets hope they are the totals for 2007 or else somebody is making a killing financially.
North Great George’s Street 1,055 fines
Waterloo Road 810 fines
D’Olier Street 717 fines
Noel Purcell Walk 641 fines
Barrow Street 620 fines
Smithfield 580 fines
South William Street 505 fines
Gardiner Street Lower 443 fines
South Circular Road 428 fines
Synge Street 414 fines
So if you are doing business in Dublin city or you work in city center then ensure you put money in the machine at these locations BUT also make sure you top up.
