Great news for Carlow with the announcement that Unum will create 200 jobs in the town. They are high end jobs too with 100 software developers and graduates to be recruited by the end of the year. This announcement has bucked the trend in Carlow as two of the towns biggest employers have shut down operations in the last number of years – Greencore Sugar and Lapple.
This article made front page of the Irish Times Business supplement yesterday. The poor journalist had to write a positive story. You must admit that we have been bombarded by poor economy, property crash, jobs lost and unemployment for the last year.
Not only is it great news for the local economy it will remove the daily commute to Dublin by some lucky locals. Carlow has a large number of its workers who make the daily trip BUT it is also a problem across the country.
On a related topic in Carlow – can anyone tell me if the Carlow bypass is complete? I had a few horror days there last year. If not perhaps getting the train from Carlow to Dublin work is not a bad option.
