Unemployment in Ireland – Analysis

Recent reports have indicated that Dublin commuter towns have been hardest hit by unemployment. There have been calls for the government to channel more energy in attracting employers to set up in these regions. Some of the findings are below.

Newbridge – 21.5% of the population on the live register.
Navan – 9.61% of the population on the live register.
Edenderry – 16.5% of the population on the live register.
Maynooth – 19.76% of the population on the live register.
Athy – 14.88% of the population on the live register.
Bray – 6.36% of the population on the live register.
Ardee – 21.03% of the population on the live register.

According the CSO unemployment rose 6.4% last month to its highest level since July 1999. There are now just under 200,000 people signing on in Ireland.

There have been calls from the government to step up its school building programme to help combat the slump in the construction sector.
