Psychometric Testing – Effective Recruitment & Selection

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Psychometric Testing – Improving recruitment.

Most companies I speak to place an advert, screen the applications and CV’s, make a short list, interview, screen-out unqualified applicants, check referees and make an offer to the surviving applicant. Increasingly companies are realising that this process is not an effective means of recruiting and selecting the right people. The cost of a wrong hire can be as much as 3 times salary and so selecting the wrong people is costing companies dearly. So how can companies improve recruitment and selection?

Psychometric Testing & Effective Interviewing
I read an interesting article recently that described and interviewee like a tree. The part that is visible (fruits) and the part that is not visible (roots). The problem with most traditional interviews is that they focus on what can be seen (the fruits). These interviews fall into two categories; a glorified sales pitch by the interviewer or an informal conversation. They lack direction and focus and no two interviews are the same making it difficult to compare candidates objectively. For effective recruitment you will combine a competency based interview with psychometric testing (for example ability tests and personality questionnaires). This combination will help you dig beneath the surface and uncover important information about applicants.

Mistakes in recruitment can be costly and for some firms they can mean the end of a dream. Effective analysis, planning and utilising effective assessment techniques can greatly improve your hiring decisions.

This article is for the poor unfortunates who drive to town and don’t get free parking. It is also for those of you with business meetings in town and regularly use street parking. If you cut corners and don’t pay your parking it could cost you 80 euro a pop. Below are the latest figures with the clamping hotspots and the number of people caught. I don’t know if these are 2007 figure or 2008 to date. Lets hope they are the totals for 2007 or else somebody is making a killing financially.

Interview Advice Ireland – Mistakes at Interview

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

1. Lack of knowledge about the company – This is basic interview preparation. Research the company and the industry. Avoid questions like “so what do you guys actually do?”

2. Poor appearance – Always sway to the side of caution. Many companies now operate casual clothing arrangements but suit and tie unless you are told otherwise.

3. Poor preparation – Know what the employer wants and how you meet these needs with supportive evidence.

4. Mess up the basics – Basic like arriving on time.

5. Over enthusiasm OR lack of enthusiasm – How you say it and your body language is as important as the words you say. You only have one chance to make a first impression. Lack of enthusiasm or perceived desperation can kill your chance of landing a job.

6. Any negativity – avoid at all costs particularly about previous roles, employers and companies. Keep your comments positive

7. Poor listening skills – If you are unclear about a question that has been asked seek clarification rater than rambling on about unrelated stuff. Listening is a key interviewing skill.

8. No supporting evidence – Supporting evidence creates a bigger impact. Be able to back up what you say you can do with examples.

9. Lies damn lies – Lies will come back to bite you on the backside.

More mistakes you should avoid!!!!

Banking & Finance Dublin – Bear Stearns possible job loss in Dublin

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Irish employees of Bear Stearns are believed to be expecting job loss news in Dublin. This follows the sale of the firm to JP Morgan Chase at a greatly reduced price. Rumour has it that the company may announce redundancies this week. Staff were told that they would be provided with information after the Easter Break. It is believed that JP is reviewing global business.

Bear Stearns employees about 150 staff in Dublin across Bear Stearns Bank and Bear Stearns Dublin Development Centre.

This is certainly not good news for the Banking & Finance sector in Ireland ot the Job market in general. This sector is viewed as a key pillar of the jobs market. This is further evidence that the troble in US is rippling to Ireland.

It was reported yesterday that 34,000 banking jobs have been terminated on Wall Street in the last 9 months.
