Polish workers returning to Poland

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Latest figures indicate that Polish workers are returning home in their droves. The number of PPS numbers issued to Polish in the 1st quarter of 2008 has dropped significantly from 2007.

There are a number of reasons for these developments. The obvious slowdown in the Irish economy is a significant factor BUT the improving economic conditions in Poland are affecting the movement. The polish economy has been increasing at a rate of 5% and it is expected at 5.5% in 2008 compared to 1.9% in Ireland.

The flow of Polish out of Ireland could increase as a number of schemes have been set up to attract workers back home to support the growing economy. It is likely that workers in decreasing sectors like construction will jump at the chance to move back home. Perhaps this may also be a passport for some Irish construction workers to live and work in a new country BUT more importantly help balance the supply and demand for staff issues.

PPS numbers issued to Polish workers

1st quarter 2008 – 11,616
1st quarter 2007 – 18,729
1st quarter 2006 – 20,341
1st quarter 2005 – 10,402

Ryanair & Thermo King – New Jobs & Jobs lost!!

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

There has been mixed job news in Ireland over the last week with jobs created in Galway and jobs lost in Dublin. Ryanair announced the closure of its Dublin call centre with 40 telesales jobs to go. Thermo King announced the creation of 19 new jobs at its plant in Galway where it employs 600 staff. If you would like to read more about these announcements visit.

Banking & Finance Dublin – Bear Stearns possible job loss in Dublin

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Irish employees of Bear Stearns are believed to be expecting job loss news in Dublin. This follows the sale of the firm to JP Morgan Chase at a greatly reduced price. Rumour has it that the company may announce redundancies this week. Staff were told that they would be provided with information after the Easter Break. It is believed that JP is reviewing global business.

Bear Stearns employees about 150 staff in Dublin across Bear Stearns Bank and Bear Stearns Dublin Development Centre.

This is certainly not good news for the Banking & Finance sector in Ireland ot the Job market in general. This sector is viewed as a key pillar of the jobs market. This is further evidence that the troble in US is rippling to Ireland.

It was reported yesterday that 34,000 banking jobs have been terminated on Wall Street in the last 9 months.

Commuters forgo salary to work near home.

Is this a change of Business in Ireland as we know it.

I could never see the attraction of firms locating in central Dublin. High costs, congestion, expensive sarnies and coffee. Do they pay for expensive offices in city center Dublin to get the staff??

Hmmmmmmm

I though most employees were living in Navan, Cavan, Kinnegad, Drogheda, Dundalk, Naas, Newbridge, Wicklow, Gorey, Bray ….. basically everywhere except Dublin.

Looks like there is even more incentive for firms to locate outside the capital as survey today announced that most commuters from Wicklow would be willing to take a paycut to work closer to home. This means that all commuters would be willing to do so.

Commuters spend on average 2hrs per day on trains planes and automobiles. I guess the penny has actually dropped that the extra 10k for working in Dublin is not worth 10-15 hours a week.

I am going to start a bring the jobs to the people campaign encouraging employers to relocated to the leafy suburbs cutting stress, traffic congestion, costs and improving life for us all.

Positive outlook for IT Sector

Positive IT sector

There seems to be quite a bit of bullish optimism across the Irish economy – glass half full stuff. Today it is the turn of the IT sector. I hope these voices are that of realism and not a case of dillusion like our good friend from Iraq “Comical Ali” – remember his statements about the US forces with a US tank in the background.

Anyway today I am going to believe what I have read.

The IT sector looks set to have a bright 2008. Over 50% of Senior Technology Executives surveyed were confident about the prospects for the sector in 2008. 68% of those surveyed expected to hire staff this year. Of note is that 48% felt that it was getting more difficult to recruit good staff.

So all the IT professionals who left the sector after the 2000 dotbomb – come back we need you!!

Redundancies – Sercom Solutions & American Power Conversion.

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

More job loss this week included 120 in Limerick and 35 in Mayo.

SerCom Solutions is set to make 120 staff redundant. Sercom is a global supply chain specialist based in Limerick. The news follows the loss of 220 staff in Dublin. Interestingly Sercom Solutions set up operations in China in 2005. Changing customer demands was cited as the reason for the closure.

This news was part of an eventful week in the jobs market. Expected jobs loss at ICT Europe did not happen although a reduced working week was introduced for some staff. County Mayo was hit with 35 jobs lost at American Power Conversion (APC)

Positive jobs news this week included the creation jobs at Channel Adviser, Vistakon and Umun.

Unum Jobs in Carlow – Now recruiting.

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I posted previously about the Jobs News in Carlow with Unum announcing 200 new jobs in the town. Well if you have not heard they are officially recruiting. They have radio adverts on Today FM. Anyway for those of you who have not heard the advert check out the Unum website. Happy job hunting.

Vistakon – 100m investment and 50 new jobs

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Still some life is the old dog (manufacturing)!!

The manufacturing sector has performed a mini revival in Munster Region the last few weeks with a number of new jobs created. There was a 250 jobs announcement by Zimmer in Shannon and now a further 50 with 100m investment by Vistakon. Vistakon has its plant in Limerick at the National Technological Park (near University of Limerick). This announcement is actually the 2nd expansion announcement by Vistakon in the past 2 years.

Other good news of the job front today is that initial fears of jobs loss at ICT Europe will not be happening.

Donseed Limited to create 26 jobs in Tralee

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Donseed Ltd announced last week (old news BUT good news) that it is investing 1.2m Euro at its Tralee base. This is great news for Tralee with the creation of 26 new jobs.

I am posting about this announcement as I have just arrived back from a business trip in the town BUT I also think these smaller job announcements often slip through the net. Most papers and media are putting too much emphasis on the negative jobs news as this is what is selling the papers. SME’s now account for a large % of employment in Ireland and I think this fact is often lost with all the emphasis on MNC’s.

Organisations should cosider regional towns as there are huge benefits such as skilled labour, reduced operational costs and cheaper coffee shops. By the way I recommend www.felspointhotel.ie as a place to stay.

Internet – Networking sites like Bebo & Facebook are costing firms 700m a year.

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Rising inflation, poor exchange rates and rising costs are making survival difficult for many companies in Ireland. But just when you thought that things can’t get any worse, the latest research has indicated that staff misuse of office technology such as internet and email is costing a fortune. Staff using networking sites during work is costing companies about 700m annually. It is estimated that workers are logging on for 30 minutes a day which works out at about 3 weeks a year per employee at a cost of 700m. Internet abuse is now a huge problem for employers but what is the solution.

I was discussing this topic with my neighbor (he works in IT) and he informed me how his company combats internet abuse. It was the old reliable name and shame. If organisations want a potential fix to the problem they might consider this option. Produce a daily or weekly internet usage report and email it to all employees. I might add the report is not on what sites they are visiting but how long they are using the internet. This will be one league table your employees will not want to be top off. Alternatively you could hire people like me – I don’t see the attraction with these networking sites.
