Scenarios – Managerial Judgement Ability Test
Scenarios is a unique ability test developed by SHL which provides information about managerial judgement. Managerial Judgement is an individual’s ability to evaluate managerial situations and decide the most appropriate and effective ways of handling these situations. It was developed to support recruitment and development within commercial environments.
Scenarios – What does it measure?
As outlined above scenarios measures an individual’s managerial judgement. The test outlines 16 managerial situations with a number of possible responses. The individual is asked to rate each of the responses from a scale of highly desirable through to highly undesirable. Throughout the test 100 responses are rated. Answers are compared against ideal answers generated by management experts providing an indication of the individual’s managerial judgement.
Benefits of Scenarios
Recruitment – provides information on whether an applicant knows how to manage.
Development – Provides organisation with feedback and information about their existing staff.

Psychometric Testing – Improving recruitment.
Most companies I speak to place an advert, screen the applications and CV’s, make a short list, interview, screen-out unqualified applicants, check referees and make an offer to the surviving applicant. Increasingly companies are realising that this process is not an effective means of recruiting and selecting the right people. The cost of a wrong hire can be as much as 3 times salary and so selecting the wrong people is costing companies dearly. So how can companies improve recruitment and selection?
Psychometric Testing & Effective Interviewing
I read an interesting article recently that described and interviewee like a tree. The part that is visible (fruits) and the part that is not visible (roots). The problem with most traditional interviews is that they focus on what can be seen (the fruits). These interviews fall into two categories; a glorified sales pitch by the interviewer or an informal conversation. They lack direction and focus and no two interviews are the same making it difficult to compare candidates objectively. For effective recruitment you will combine a competency based interview with psychometric testing (for example ability tests and personality questionnaires). This combination will help you dig beneath the surface and uncover important information about applicants.
Mistakes in recruitment can be costly and for some firms they can mean the end of a dream. Effective analysis, planning and utilising effective assessment techniques can greatly improve your hiring decisions.

Interview Preparation – An employers guide
If you are a jobseeker and want information on interview preparation visit this post BUT if you are an employer read this article.
Interview preparation is essential for interviewee but equally for the interviewer. I find that many interviewees cut corners in their interview preparation – the result is that it costs them the job. But I also come across many employers who cut corners with their interview preparation and this has huge costs both in time and financially. There are a number of key points to consider.
Interview Preparation – Identify what you want
This is the foundations of any good interview process. Employers need to sit down and identify exactly what it is they are looking for in the new hire. Ideally you will being doing a competency based interview so this will involve selection of key behaviours and competencies. Typically around six competencies are found to be essential for a given job.
Interview Preparation – Identify and select interview questions
It is important to plan your interview and the questions to gain the information you need. Too many employers “go with the flow”. This results in lack of focus. But more importantly – how can you compare applicants for decision-making. If you are doing a competency interview then choose appropriate questions focused on the key competencies you selected.
Interview Preparation – Logistics & organisation
Ensure you have all necessary documentation in advance. This includes a copy of the job spec and information about the candidate including – CV, application form and personality reports if completed. You will also need general information on the recruitment process such as the next step after interview. Other considerations include logistics on the day. Has an interview room been booked, who will meet the applicants and who will be doing the interviews.
Interview Preparation – Review applicant information beforehand
It is essential to review all documentation including CV, application form and any psychometric testing results. Sounds obvious advice but believe me I have seen it all from both sides of the interview table.
Research has indicated that the best form of selection is a combination of competency based interview and objective assessment (psychometric testing). If you need help assessing and selecting candidates visit www.measurability.ie or read this post.

The internet and technology has changed many areas of life including recruitment. Initially it was the introduction of online jobboards but now it is Bebo, Blogs and Second Life.
Many companies are now considering Second Life as a platform to attract, meet, provide information and provide open days to potential employees. Yes virtual questions and answers!! Sounds mad BUT if you don’t explore this option you could be missing out on a wealth of talent. Many progressive companies have started – have a look for your self. There are company offices and even recruitment agencies. I hope they are better than the agencies in the real world.
I find it hard to get many clients to use psychometric testing when recruiting so I don’t know how I could get them to log into Second Life.
